Chess club meets on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. Wednesday club is for year 4s and Thursday for years  5 and 6.  Thursday club also incorporates Broadclyst Junior Chess Club which accommodates the students at Clyst Vale who want to continue playing.

Chess is played in school in the mornings before 0900 in 4CW; during lunchtimes in 4CW and in the science room.  The school enters a number of children in all of the tournaments organised by Devon Junior Chess Association and teams of 5 or 6 players take part in the English Primary Schools’ Chess Association’s under 12,  under 11 and under 9 Championships.   Individuals play in the London Junior Championships and the West of England Championships.  Our stronger players take part in the British Chess Championships.  This year a number of Broadclyst children won through to the Gigafinal of the UK Land Chess Challenge at Wellington College whilst one went all the way to the Terafinal at Warwick School.

Generally,  Broadclyst children make up 30 – 40% of the Devon Under 11 Chess Team.  In the 2008/09 season the top 5 boards for Devon were pupils at Broadclyst.

We have been Devon Schools’ Team Champions for the past 6 years. In December we shall be attempting our seventh win.
