Design & Technology
Wednesdays 3.30-4.45
This club offers a range of design and build projects for children in year six. Our projects will include hovercrafts, picture frames and gliders, to name but a few. Members will learn to prepare designs, as well as use a variety of tools and construction methods in a safe and fun environment. There will also be plenty of opportunities to test finished products and discuss the best ways of overcoming the challenges that each project provides.
Year 5 - Class MP
How did Henry VIII’s actions affect our lives today?
How do rivers affect the world around us?
How did Usain Bolt become so fast?
These will be just some of the questions that 5MP will be working to answer this year. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to engage in both independent and collaborative work, with an emphasis on solving open-ended problems. Some of the topics we will be investigating are the Terrible Tudors, Rivers and the environment and the London 2012 Olympics.
The Terrible Tudors
During the autumn term the class will be investigating how the events of the Tudor period influenced the world in which we live. We will look into the lives of the monarchs and discover how their different personalities and views changed the lives of ordinary people in the 1500s. We will also be debating which Monarch had the most impact, as well as asking, “Was Sir Francis Drake the hero that people believed him to be at the time?” Children will be collaborating on projects involving boats and floatation, trebuchets and mechanisms as well as creating electronic survey boards to assist them in discovering what their peers know about Tudor topics.
Rivers and the environment
In spring, 5MP will investigate rivers and the way in which they alter the environment around them. There will be plenty of practical opportunities to explore the topic, with a field trip to Heatree Activity centre on Dartmoor. We will also be looking at how we can protect rivers from pollution and damage. During this topic children will collaborate on various research and building projects which will enhance their understanding of science and the natural world.
Olympic fever!
As the country prepares itself for the world’s ultimate athletic event, 5MP will be investigating some key questions about various aspects of the Olympics. Children will look at the way in which our bodies respond to exercise, as well as proving or disproving statements such as “Taller people make better sprinters”. We will also look at the history of the Olympics and discover how it is shaping Britain today.
BTV
As on-going project throughout the year, 5MP will be responsible along with 5VH for the production of television programs in the school film studio. We will be producing a variety of films including world and local news, documentaries and even exercise videos.
