The hockey club's goals are simply to have fun, to enjoy friendly competition, to provide good exercise and a good teamwork ethic. We play a version of hockey called UNIHOC. UNIHOC is a game for everyone. The game started in Sweden some 20 years ago. The Swedes wanted a relaxed hard floor alternative to hockey that was safe, could be played by girls and boys together, and gave good exercise. UNIHOC is all of these things and so grew quickly in popularity.

It has now conquered 20 countries throughout the world. Now, UNIHOC has come to Broadclyst!

UNIHOC has its roots in field hockey and ice hockey. The sport is played on a flat surface and the rules have been made minimize the number of interruptions. So the game is fast-paced and potentially exhausting.

The sport is played with strong plastic sticks and either a lattice plastic ball or a tennis ball. The sticks are lightweight and allow the ball to be struck using either side of the stick’s head.

Members of the club learn how to hold the stick effectively and safely, how to move with the ball, how to pass, receive a pass and how to shoot. We have also looked at tactics for attacking and defending as well as set piece work for free hits. Each week the children also have a chance to practice their skills by playing in a match.

As the school saves the best until last, the club runs each and every Friday (during term time) after school, from 3.45pm to 4.45pm. Currently the club includes about 30 members from years 4, 5 and 6, from which the first Broadclyst UNIHOC team will be chosen. Anyone else who wants to join would be very welcome. Once we have a team, any support will of course be appreciated!
